Hugo
Hugo Boss Hugo arrived in 1995 in a flask-shaped bottle and it is one of the most recognisable green fragrances of the decade.
Green apple opens it with lavender, mint, grapefruit and basil. The apple is tart and unripe rather than sweet, and the mint and basil pile more greenery on top of it, so the start is genuinely bracing. It smells like cold air.
Sage, geranium, carnation and jasmine make up the heart. Sage keeps the herbal idea running, geranium adds a green metallic edge, and carnation contributes a dry spiciness that marks the fragrance's age in a good way.
Fir, cedarwood and patchouli finish it. Fir is coniferous and resinous, cedarwood dry, and patchouli earthy, so the base stays cool and woody rather than warming up. The whole fragrance holds one idea from start to finish.
How Hugo wears
Moderate on both counts, lasting a working day and staying within reach. Spring and autumn suit it, and it works at a desk as readily as a weekend.

As it develops, the heart introduces Sage, Geranium, Carnation, Jasmine , creating a more textured centre. The transition remains smooth, allowing each note to emerge without disrupting the overall balance of the structure.
The base settles into Fir, Cedarwood, Patchouli , providing cohesion and depth to the drydown while maintaining continuity with the freshness established in the opening.
